Samsung has been ruling the foldable smartphone segment over the past few years. However, it will soon start facing some heat in the segment as Chinese rivals are launching new foldable phones. Even Apple is said to be working on foldable devices. Later this year, we could see a Galaxy Z Flip competitor from OPPO.
It is being reported that OPPO will launch a Galaxy Z Flip 4 rival in the second half of 2022. The upcoming smartphone is said to feature the 4nm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1+ chipset that will also be used in the Galaxy Z Flip 4. Moreover, it could carry a rumored price tag of CNY 5,000, which translates to around $756. That's cheaper than the Galaxy Z Flip 3's discounted price of $899.
This will not be OPPO's first foldable screen phone. The Chinese firm launched the OPPO Find N a few months ago to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. It looks like the Chinese smartphone brand's plan is to undercut Samsung's foldable phones. The OPPO Find N is priced at CNY 7,699 (around $1,165), which is a lot cheaper than the Galaxy Z Fold 3's $1,499 price tag.
In all likelihood, OPPO's clamshell-style foldable phone will be limited to the Chinese market for a few months. However, starting next year, OPPO, OnePlus, Vivo, and Xiaomi could bring their foldable phones to several Asian and European markets, and that's when Samsung will face real competition. But that's great for consumers as higher competition will lead to faster innovation and lower pricing.
