Apple to copy Samsung’s Z Fold 3’s display tech for its foldables

A latest report by The Elec, suggests that Apple has started the developmental work for a new type of display that it will use on its foldable devices. What's more interesting is that Apple will be copying Samsung's display technology that the latter uses on its Galaxy Z Fold 3.

The biggest challenge in developing a foldable display is to make it thin, but robust so that it can withstand continual folding and unfolding throughout the years. Samsung has, as of now, perfected the technology with its Galaxy Z Fold 3. The company eliminated the polarizer layer with the Galaxy Z Fold 3's OLED display, and Apple is said to include the same display technology on its own version of this tech without the brightness-reducing and panel-thickening polarizer.

Like always, Samsung is once again the display solution for Apple

A polarizer only allows light to pass through specific directions, thereby improving the visibility of the display. But it uses more power to maintain the same level of brightness, resulting in a thicker display panel. Samsung removed the polarizer in the Galaxy Z Fold 3, used a printed color filter on a thin film, and added a black pixel define layer.

This helped Samsung achieve 25% less power consumption and 33% higher light transmittance. Now reports of Apple joining the bandwagon and copying Samsung's display tech, hint that Apple is indeed working on foldable devices, although it is just in the very initial stages of development.
