Samsung’s new high-end custom chip for Galaxy S series not coming soon

Going by the latest report by BusinessKorea, Samsung will be emulating Apple by building its very own high-end custom processor for the Galaxy S series. Notably, the Device Solution (DS) division of Samsung Electronics has already started developing an Application Processor (AP) for the Galaxy smartphones.

Apparently, this new AP will not be coming anytime soon. Samsung aims to complete the design of this chip by 2023, and there are efforts going on to install the application processor in flagship Galaxy smartphones starting in 2025. This goes in line with the announcement Roh Tae-moon, president of Samsung Electronics’ MX Business Division, reportedly made at a town hall meeting in March.

The GOS controversy triggered Samsung to develop its own AP for Galaxy smartphones

Roh stated that he will personally monitor the development of an AP tailored to Galaxy smartphones. He made the remark following the questions about how he would handle the GOS (Game Optimization Service) controversy.

As of now, Samsung's MX Division purchases such chips from suppliers including Qualcomm and MediaTek to fulfill its needs. The Exynos SoC, which is the company's home-grown chipset, has also featured in some of its latest Galaxy smartphones. But it isn't good enough when compared to Apple's or Qualcomm's SoC.

This is why, once the new AP comes out, Samsung plans to use the Exynos chipset only for its mid-tier and lower-end smartphones. Moreover, it will also help create a robust Samsung technological ecosystem, just like Apple. Chinese OEMs like OPPO have also started developing their own APs.
