Samsung to showcase cutting-edge 3nm chips during Joe Biden’s factory visit

US President Joe Biden is beginning his three-day visit to South Korea today, just ten days after Yoon Seok-youl became the President of South Korea. Biden's tour will start with a visit to Samsung's semiconductor chip plant in Pyeongtaek, the world's biggest semiconductor factory.

It is being reported that Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong will be present there and will offer a personal tour of the massive Pyeongtaek complex to the US President. Samsung Foundry is expected to showcase its upcoming 3nm GAA chips to Joe Biden. The South Korean firm is using the GAA (Gate All Around) for the first time in its chip manufacturing history.

Samsung Foundry said that it would start the mass production of 3nm GAA chips within the next couple of months. These chips will reportedly offer a 35% decrease in physical size and 30% higher performance than 5nm chips. Alternatively, they can offer up to 50% lower power consumption. The South Korean firm is in the early stages of 2nm process development, and those chips could be manufactured sometime in 2025.

Over the past few years, Samsung's semiconductor chip manufacturing technology has lagged behind TSMC in terms of yield and power efficiency. The company lost big clients like Apple and Qualcomm due to those shortcomings. However, with 3nm GAA, the South Korean firm could finally match or even overtake TSMC's 3nm chips.
