Intel and Samsung bosses meet to discuss possible collaboration

There's a lot of activity happening in the chip industry and the US government has been throwing its weight around it. It views influence over the global chip supply chain as a key interest. What bigger proof can there be besides the fact that on his recent summit with South Korea, US President Joe Biden headed straight to Samsung's largest chipmaking facility after landing in the country.

Samsung is playing a key role in this industry. It recently announced the construction of a $17 billion chipmaking plant in Taylor, Texas. The company may also be open to collaborations with other players in the industry. Perhaps that's why Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger went down to South Korea recently to hold talks with Samsung bosses.

Intel CEO flew to Seoul for a meeting with Samsung bosses

Korean media is reporting, and Samsung has confirmed, that Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger has been in Seoul for a series of meetings with some of Samsung's top executives. Gelsinger visited Seoul after attending the 2022 World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

“Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong met Intel CEO Patrick Gelsinger,” Samsung said in a statement, adding that “They discussed how to cooperate between the two companies.” The statement also added that topics under discussion included “next-generation memory chips, fabless system chips, foundry chips as well as those for PCs and mobile devices.

The Intel CEO met with Samsung Electronics Vice Chairman Lee Jae-yong, who is the defacto leader of the conglomerate, as well as co-CEO and head of Samsung's chip division Kyung Kye-hyun. Samsung's mobile division boss Roh Tae-moon and other high-ranking executives were also present in the meeting.

Neither company has confirmed if any decisions have been made following the meetings. Given that Intel and Samsung do have a history of collaborating, it's reasonable to assume that the companies would be willing to team up again. Would they have talked about Samsung beating Intel to become the world's largest chipmaker by revenue recently? Probably not.
