Samsung may ship roughly twice as many 4th generation foldable smartphones as it did 3rd gen. The company has reportedly set a target of 15 million foldable phone shipments for the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 combined.
The two upcoming foldable flagships should be unveiled in August and released later the same month. Samsung hasn't set the date in stone officially, but rumors claim that the launch event will take place on August 10 and the phones will hit the shelves in select markets on August 26.
Samsung wants to ship 15 million Galaxy Z Flip 4 and Z Fold 4 units combined. Not only is the company aiming to double shipments from the previous generation of foldable devices, but Samsung also expects the ratio of Z Fold and Z Flip shipments to equalize, with Z Fold 4 sales gaining on the Z Flip 4. In Q1 2022, the foldable phone market recorded 2.22 million shipments — a 571% year-on-year increase. Samsung's Z Flip 3 captured 51% of the market, while the Galaxy Z Fold 3 had a 20% share.
The upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 4 could hit the shelves at a lower price than the previous generations and convince more customers than ever to join the foldable phone segment. The tables could turn, and the Z Fold line may become more popular than the clamshell Z Flip.
The latest reports suggest that Samsung has increased its reliance on parts supplied by Chinese companies. This could help its foldable phones become more affordable.
