While Samsung SDI has already joined hands with popular car manufacturers around the world, such as Volkswagen, BMW, and Stellantis, to supply batteries for their passenger electric vehicles (EVs), the company is also keen on supplying batteries for commercial EVs. To that extent, Samsung SDI is demonstrating its latest battery technologies for commercial electric vehicles at the IAA Transportation 2022 event in Hannover, Germany, an international exhibition for commercial vehicles.
Samsung SDI has showcased high-nickel prismatic battery cells. These batteries are made with proprietary silicon-carbon nanocomposite technology, which is designed to improve energy intensity, charging speed, and durability. Mind you, this booth was only open to businesses at the IAA (Internationale Automobil-Ausstellung) event.
The company also had scalable battery modules on display that are designed to be customized for individual commercial vehicle models, which, it said, drew attention from participants. Samsung SDI also demonstrated its road map for future prismatic and cylindrical batteries, which included cobalt-free as well as the much-talked-about solid-state batteries.
Large electric vehicles, such as trucks and buses, need 8-13 times more batteries than an electric passenger car, and that is why the commercial EV segment is a highly prospective market for battery suppliers. According to MarketsandMarkets, a market research firm, the commercial vehicle market size is expected to grow from 3,53,000 units in 2022 to 31,44,000 units in 2030, with an annual growth rate of 31.4%.
