Generative Wallpapers are cool but how about AI Watch Faces?

Samsung appears to be doing interesting things with graphics and Generative AI. The Sketch to Image tool Samsung introduced with One UI 6.1.1 can be a lot of fun, if a little unpredictable at times, and so is the Generative Wallpaper tool, which is available for Galaxy phones and even select Family Hub refrigerators.

But what more can Generative AI do for us? Well, it's hard to tell how these tools will or won't shape the world long-term, but if we let our imaginations run wild, we can come up with some far-out concepts.

Generative Galaxy watch faces. Need I say more?

For the most part, we — SamMobile — try to take a realistic approach whenever we talk about features we would like to see in future One UI versions. But, if I may, today I'd like to share a dream concept that will probably never come to pass. It's not realistic, but I think it's cool.

Namely, I believe one of the most impressive implementations of Generative AI would be for Samsung to create a tool that allows Galaxy Watch users to generate new watch faces similar to how we can create Generative Wallpapers.

Story continues after the video

This AI-based watch face tool would let us choose from preset design languages, colors, number of complications, and so on. We'd hit “Generate” and let the AI randomness work its magic. Ideally, the resulting watch faces would be just as customizable as any other existing watch faces that haven't been generated using AI.

Yes, I know. I can't imagine how hard it might be to create a tool capable of generating AI watch faces. It might even be impossible, given the current level of technology. AI still has issues understanding and rendering precise geometry and human anatomy. Asking it to create a perfectly accurate and fleshed-out watch face is probably an exercise in futility.

Not to mention that the AI tool would not only need to design watch faces but make them usable through developer tools like Galaxy Watch Studio.

Nevertheless, it's nice to dream and let your imagination run wild at least once in a while. For me, an AI tool that any Galaxy Watch owner could use to create unique watch faces through a few prompts sounds like a fun use of this emerging Generative AI technology. But I know I might be dreaming too big.

Besides, at its core, Samsung's Generative Wallpaper tool uses Google technologies, and it would probably be difficult for the Korean tech giant to create an AI watch face generator without Google's help. But one can dream.

Will we ever see anything like this in action? Never say never, but probably not. And I suppose that's good news for third-party watch face developers.
