Samsung is in a bit of a crisis right now. While the company has been the world's biggest memory chip maker for decades, it seems to have lost its footing in high-end memory chips (HBM) used in AI accelerators and GPUs. In times like these, Samsung CEO urged employees to focus on attaining technology leadership.Summarize in one-click with Galaxy AI

Samsung CEO wants employees to attain technology leadership amid crisis

During the company's 55th anniversary celebration, Samsung Vice Chairman and CEO Han Jong-hee called for the need to develop better technologies and attain market leadership to address current and upcoming challenges. The company's smartphone market share is dropping globally, and its HBM chips aren't as good as those of its rivals.

Han Jong-hee, Samsung's vice chairman and CEO, said, “Securing technology and quality for our customers is the foundation of our competitiveness and the only way we can lead the paradigm shift. Let's make desperate efforts to further strengthen our technology leadership, ensuring a level of quality that remains unmatched.

The CEO's comments came amid challenges Samsung is currently facing. High-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips are in huge demand right now, as they are a crucial component in AI chips developed by brands like AMD, AWS, Intel, and Nvidia. While Samsung's HBM3E chips are yet to be certified by Nvidia, Samsung's rival SK Hynix has sold all its HBM3E capacity for 2024 and 2025.

JH Han said AI will define the technology landscape for the next decade. He said AI will transition from the bubble phase to the phase of democratization and that unimaginable things will become everyday realities in the coming years. He also said the company needs to adapt to market conditions and change the way its employees work.

The South Korean firm needs to “identify new growth engines, beyond specific products or business lines,” according to JH Han. During the event, Samsung's top executives, including Vice Chairman Jun Young-hyun, were present. Jun Young-hyun recently took charge of the semiconductor division.
