In an official newsroom post, Samsung revealed that over 10 million of its home appliances are now connected to the SmartThings platform. The SmartThings app lets you control compatible devices using your voice and set up many IF/THEN automated functions to easily manage all of your home appliances. SmartThings works with hundreds of compatible devices, including lights, cameras, voice assistants, washing machines, refrigerators, and air conditioners.

Samsung acquired SmartThings in 2014, and it was reintroduced in 2018. While the initial app was barebones, over a period of time, Samsung has induced a wide range of features into the smart home platform. Thanks to this, the number of connected home appliances grew multiple-fold and is expected to breach the 12 million unit mark by the end of this year. Samsung also estimates that it will cross the 20 million mark next year.

By next year, SmartThings users will be able to link appliances from 13 brands

One of the main reasons the number of SmartThings connected appliances is increasing in number is the efficient notification feature. This feature notifies the owner when the operation ends or when there is a fault in the appliance. Also, the remote control functionality is an evergreen one. SmartThings also receive periodic software upgrades that help diagnose and manage products.

As noted by the newsroom post, the home care service was one of the most used features in the summer, when air conditioner use rapidly increased because of the ever-changing climatic conditions. In fact, “the average monthly number of users from June to August of this year was about 1.5 times higher than the average number of users from January to May of this year.

The SmartThings Energy Service helps monitor and strategically manage the amount of energy used, which is also one of the appealing features of the app. The Samsung SmartThings app isn't just limited to controlling Samsung appliances; currently, more than 300 partner devices can be connected.
