Earlier reports had claimed that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset that could power the upcoming Galaxy S23 series has a 1+2+2+3 configuration. This would include one Cortex-X3 CPU core, two Cortex-A720 CPU cores, two Cortex-A710 CPU cores, and three Cortex-A510 CPU cores. However, the latest reports claim that the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC will come with different specs than we know.

This piece of information comes from the reliable tipster Ice Universe. According to Ice Universe, instead of two Cortex-A720 cores, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will feature a pair of Cortex-A715 cores. Also, the Cortex-X3 will have a maximum clock speed of 3.2GHz and the Cortex-A510 will clock at a speed of 2GHz. Lastly, the Cortex-A715 and Cortex-A710 cores will have clock speeds of up to 2.8GHz. These cores will be paired with the Adreno 740 GPU.

Qualcomm is expected to make the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC official in November

There is speculation of an ultra-high frequency variant of the SoC that would sport a prime core clocked at 3.4-3.5GHz. To give you a bit of comparison, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 has a prime core clocked at 3.2GHz, while the A16 Bionic on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max has a performance core clocked at 3.46GHz. Qualcomm is all set to host the Snapdragon Summit between November 15-17, 2022, in Hawaii and is expected to unveil the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 officially.

Qualcomm is believed to be focussing on the “energy efficiency” part rather than performance with its new Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. This makes the “ultra-high frequency” version of the chipset of much interest to OEMs looking for a chip that emphasizes power over efficiency. As far as the manufacturing is concerned, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 will supposedly be produced by TSMC in its 4nm mode.

Google to follow Samsung’s lead by using custom chips for smartwatches

Qualcomm was way too slow in bringing advanced chips for smartwatches, and that is when Apple took a huge leap forward. Samsung didn't depend on Qualcomm and developed in-house Exynos chips for Galaxy Watches. While Google switched from Exynos to Snapdragon chips for second and third-generation Pixel Watches, it could switch to in-house chips in […]
