Matter, the smart home standard meant to push the concept of IoT device interoperability to new heights, was released last week. And following last week's announcement, Samsung has now revealed a partnership with Amazon that will allow SmartThings and Alexa users to use Matter's multi-admin feature and expand cross-device communication and capabilities.
The goal of this new Samsung-Amazon collaboration is to simplify the setup process of Matter devices through SmartThings and Alexa. Samsung says this collaboration is built upon the Commissionable Endpoints APIs, as well as the upcoming Alexa APIs that enable multi-admin setup and Thread credential sharing for Matter.
According to SmartThings Head and Corporate Vice President, “SmartThings customers have long enjoyed using Alexa’s voice capabilities to give them more ways to control the home. We are excited to work with Amazon to help simplify the smart home experience and provide more choice to our mutual customers on the types of devices and services they use in their homes.”
In essence, and as far as end users are concerned, this partnership will allow customers who opt-in to control Matter hardware using SmartThings and Alexa without having to set up the smart home devices on each platform. It's similar to the SmartThings-Google Home integration announced at SDC22, except this time, it concerns Amazon and Alexa.
