Well, if you thought KNOX was going to cease existing, then Google and Samsung might have spilled water on all your dreams. Today, at Google I/O, the search giant announced that it will be integrating part of KNOX right into Android for making it more secure for enterprises and IT administrators, allowing them to create special containers on a device for business data in order to keep it secure. KNOX will be integrated into Android L, the next release of Android that is currently slated for release in the fall, and finally bring the popular mobile operating system to a level where it can be considered safe for use in the corporate world at its core.
Injong Rhee, Senior Vice President of KNOX Business Group at Samsung Electronics, gave the following statement:
I am very pleased and welcome this ground breaking partnership with Google. As a driving force of Android powered mobile devices, Samsung is in a unique position to meet the rapidly evolving mobile security and privacy needs of Android users. We are delighted with the opportunity to work with Google to help build Android’s enterprise eco-system and establish Android device as the leading choice for businesses. This represents an amazing transformation in workforce mobility.
Basically, Samsung has contributed heavily to what Google is dubbing Android for Work, further enhancing the collaboration between the two giants, and singlehandedly making Samsung possibly the biggest contributor to the Android Open Source Project. KNOX has been certified by major organizations, including the US Government and Department of Defense (DoD), and it looks like it will be a huge part of Android for the foreseeable future.
