US satellite provider DirecTV has announced that it will be releasing selected movies in 4K resolution via video-in-demand, exclusively for subscribers with a Samsung TV. Titles like Star Trek (2009), Transformers: Age of Extinction, Forrest Gump, Coral Reef Adventure and The Ultimate Wave Tahiti will be among around 20 movies offered to those with a 2014 Samsung Smart TV, including models like the HU9000 and HU8550, and a Genie HD DVR. Two titles will automatically be downloaded once a user opts in to the Genie Recommends feature on their DVR, and the rest will be offered as an option for download at prices ranging from $3.99 to $15.99.

Despite the increased availability of 4K-enabled TVs, 4K content hasn't seen the same uptake. Of course, things like manufacturer exclusivity aren't going to help in increasing 4K adoption, but it is hopefully a sign that content providers are taking steps in making 4K content available for their subscribers.
