With revenues considerably down compared to where they were a year ago, Samsung has been looking towards different avenues to find a way to get back to profitability. The company is already betting big on curved displays, an area where it thinks the competition will find it hard to catch up to easily, and now, a report from The Information says that Samsung is working on a new video service for its devices, codenamed Volt. Instead of being a standard video service, Volt will offer original content in the form of short movies – it's not clear how short and what sort of content will be offered, but it is said that studio titles won't be a part of it.
Volt is being developed under the supervision of John Pleasants, who has a lot of experience from his time at Disney's mobile gaming business. Through Milk Music, Samsung is already trying to make a name for itself in the audio streaming business, and it looks like Volt could be its answer to popular names like Netflix. Volt will be renamed to something more marketable when it launches, though at this point there is no word on when Samsung plans to make an official announcement.
