[Updated] Samsung Galaxy Alpha is the first device to feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass 4

Today, Corning has announced that the Galaxy Alpha is the first mobile device to use the new Gorilla Glass 4 to protect its 4.7-inch Super AMOLED display. The fourth iteration of Gorilla Glass is just 0.4mm thin, which helped Samsung in making the Galaxy Alpha just 6.7mm thin. Corning has claimed in its official blogpost that it is their toughest protection glass yet, making it more damage-resistant to frequent drops and protects the screen from scratches and bumps. When Samsung announced the Galaxy Alpha in August, it didn't mention the presence of the Gorilla Glass 4, because Corning wasn't ready for official announcement. It appears that even the Galaxy Note 4 uses Gorilla Glass 4 but it hasn't been confirmed by Corning yet.

Cliff Hund, General Manager and President of Corning East Asia, said, “Corning spends a great deal of time collaborating with Samsung to recommend solutions that will continually improve their device design and performance. Device makers want to go thinner without sacrificing damage resistance. Samsung is not only meeting these requirements, but is on the cutting edge of smartphone design. The Galaxy ALPHA is the culmination of our close collaboration with Samsung.

Update: Corning has confirmed that the Galaxy Note 4 features Gorilla Glass 4 as well. That makes two Samsung devices that feature the latest in display protection, and we're sure there are many more to come.
