Report: Samsung eager to launch low-end Windows Phone 8.1 phones

Samsung has dipped its toes in the Windows Phone market time and time again since the OS was launched back in 2010, and according to a report from The Korea Times, the Korean manufacturer is eager to launch more handsets running on Windows Phone in 2015. However, Samsung is reportedly waiting to resolve its Android patent royalty issues with Microsoft before it moves to support the latter's mobile operating system. For those unaware, Samsung and Microsoft are embroiled in a lawsuit as a result of the former refusing to pay any patent loyalties to Microsoft after its acquisition of Nokia.

If the two companies are able to settle their differences, Samsung is expected to launch Windows Phone 8.1-powered handsets by the third quarter (Windows Phone 10, or Windows 10 as it is going to be called, will be out by then, and we will probably see it come to these Samsung devices as an update.) Samsung is reportedly looking at Windows Phone as another way of reducing its dependence on Android; Tizen is widely considered as one method Samsung is already using to do that, but the company will reportedly be focusing on TVs when it comes to its in-house mobile OS.

Given how Windows Phone has failed to take off, it remains to be seen if devices running on the OS will really help Samsung ease up on its reliance on Android. As usual, take this rumor with a pinch of salt – Windows Phone devices from Samsung will likely make their way to market in the coming months, but it can't be said if the Korean giant has the aforementioned sinister motive behind it.
