Rumors of Samsung's Apple Pay competitor could be true, as payments startup LoopPay has announced its plans to launch LoopPay-enabled cases for Samsung devices. LoopPay will partner with XPAL Power, a subsidiary of TennRich International (a Mophie and Belkin supplier), and Trident Case, a phone case manufacturer; the first cases will be made available for the Galaxy Note 4 and Galaxy S5 and will be launched sometime in 2015. While the Galaxy S5 will get only a back cover, Trident Case will be making a proper case for the Note 4, meaning it will offer support for both easy payments and for protecting the device from damage.
It remains to be seen what this means for the supposed partnership LoopPay is looking to undertake with Samsung. LoopPay allows consumers to pay for goods at sale terminals by simply touching them with a LoopPay-enabled card – making cases to enable this for device users seems like a good enough move that should negate the need for a full-on tie-up with Samsung, but it remains unclear if the two companies really will launch a true Apple Pay-like payment system.
