Samsung started reducing its dependancy on Qualcomm by completely moving to its own Exynos 7420 processor for its recently released smartphones, the Galaxy S6 and the Galaxy S6 edge. The South Korean electronics giant has been bringing consistent improvements to its home-baked chipset every six months, be it on the CPU, GPU, or connectivity front. According to AnTuTu's yearly report, the Exynos 7420 destroyed every other mobile processor in the market in terms of performance.
Last month, we reported that Samsung could come up with customised CPU cores in its next-generation Exynos processors, and that the company is also working on a new in-house GPU. Now, a new report has surfaced with some more details about the next-generation Exynos chipset and its CPU cores. According to the report, Samsung will use custom CPU cores dubbed “Mongoose” instead of ARM Cortex-A72 cores. These CPU cores will be clocked at 2.3 GHz and the chipset's single-core Geekbench score is reported to be around 2,200 points, which is around 45 percent higher than the Exynos 7420.
It seems that Samsung is trolling Qualcomm with the choice of its custom CPU name. Qualcomm names its custom CPU cores ‘Krait', which is a highly venomous Asian snake of the cobra family. Samsung's custom CPU core will be named as ‘Mongoose', which is famous for preying on snakes, even the most poisonous Cobras.
