Many consider the Galaxy S6 edge to be the most beautiful smartphone that Samsung has ever built but what they might not be aware of is that it's also the most expensive phone that Samsung has ever produced. According to a report by research firm IHS the 64GB Verizon version of the Galaxy S6 edge cost the company $290 to build, including parts and assembly. This is $34 per unit higher than what it cost Samsung to build the Galaxy S5 last year.
The report from IHS draws a comparison with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus from Apple which cost $247 and $263 to build, respectively. No wonder that the 64GB Galaxy S6 edge costs $699 off-contract in the US. Despite the fact that Samsung has used premium materials like glass and metal the Galaxy S6 edge still costs less than an iPhone, but at the same time it costs Samsung more to build it. As one can expect, the most expensive component of this device is the dual-edge curved display which when combined with its touchscreen elements adds $85 to the production cost. The second most expensive part in the Galaxy S6 edge is the Exynos 7420 processor which costs an estimated $29.50.
The full report from IHS is due to be released later today.
