Samsung has always been at the forefront of display technology. It was the first major smartphone manufacturer to use a Super AMOLED display and also the first smartphone vendor to use a dual curved display. Two months back, we also reported about ‘Project Valley‘, an upcoming smartphone from the company that might feature a foldable display.
Now, Patently Mobile has stumbled upon patent application from Samsun, which was filed with the USPTO pointing towards a smartphone with a display that can project hologram or holographic icons. The images filed in the patent application showcases a mobile phone display, a light guide member above it, and an entrance optical member.
As you can see in the images below, when the screen corresponding to the entrance optical member emits light, a holographic image is displayed above the light guide member. In simpler words, the display can project selected contents such as icons in a holographic manner for a true-to-life 3D experience.
This patent application was filed by the South Korean smartphone giant back in Q3 2014, but we can't say for sure if Samsung will release such a smartphone in the near future. Can Samsung one day make smartphones and tablets with holographic displays that were showcased in the Avengers: Age Of Ultron movie? We certainly hope so!
