It was first reported a month ago that Samsung could set up a new plant to manufacture home appliances in the United States. Reports suggested that the move was in response to US President Donald Trump's threat to impose an additional import tax on products manufactured abroad for US customers. Samsung didn't confirm anything at the time but now it has.
A senior official of the company confirmed today that Samsung is seriously considering the relocation of its manufacturing plant for home appliances from Mexico to the United States. The confirmation was made by Suh Byung-sam, executive vice president of digital appliances at Samsung, at an event to introduce the company's latest washing machine.
Suh said that Samsung is observing recent global trends to enhance its competitiveness abroad. “It is considering a plan to open a plant in the US as part of mid- and long-term strategies.” Samsung is believed to be looking at five US states and will set up its first home appliance in the United States in one of those states. South Carolina may be the most likely candidate. It may invest up to $300 million in this endeavor.
