Galaxy S8’s virtual home button may be pressure sensitive, Note 8 might have 3D Touch technology

It's pretty clear now that the Galaxy S8 is going to have a row of virtual navigation and home buttons. The fingerprint sensor has been relocated to the back and the physical home button has been ditched in favor of soft keys.

According to a new report out of South Korea, the Galaxy S8's virtual home button may be pressure sensitive. If the report is true this would mean that the Galaxy S8's virtual home button will open up different menus based on how hard or gently you press down on it.

We've heard this before as well.It was first reported three months ago that Samsung's software navigation keys for the Galaxy S8 will have 3D Touch-like functionality.

Samsung Display has reportedly been working on a pressure sensitive OLED display for the iPhone 8. It's expected to be one of the biggest suppliers of displays for Apple's first OLED iPhone. Since Apple introduced its own pressure sensitive technology called 3D Touch with the iPhone 6s, future models need to have it as well, even those that might have an OLED display.

The company has reportedly been ramping its efforts to integrate a 3D Touch sensor in the OLED display. It's believed to have showcased the display technology to partners at a VIP meeting during the Mobile World Congress 2017 in Barcelona last month.

Bear in mind that this isn't the first time that Samsung Display has made a pressure sensitive OLED display. The pressure sensitive OLED display that you find in the Huawei P9 is supplied by Samsung Display.

Samsung is now expected to partly showcase this technology on the Galaxy S8 by making the virtual home button pressure sensitive. The report also suggests that after this partial adoption the next flagship smartphones like the Galaxy Note 8 are possibly going to feature a full pressure sensitive or for lack of a better word, a 3D Touch display.
