The latest smartphone market share data from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech shows that in the three-month period ending May 2017, Samsung regained the top spot in the US smartphone market. The company's market share in the country rose from 32.9 percent to 36.2 percent compared to the previous period.

Kantar's data shows that the Galaxy S8 enabled Samsung to regain the top spot in the US smartphone market. However, the surge from the flagship smartphone's launch was lower than what would be expected from a full product redesign.

Smartphone sales in the United States are dominated by Apple and Samsung. The iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus were found to be the top two selling smartphones in the country. The Galaxy S7 came in at the number three spot while the Galaxy S8 occupied the number four spot.

It's likely that we will see the Galaxy S8 inch up on the list in the coming months as buyers hold off on purchasing the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus due to impending upgrades. Sales for the Galaxy S7 are likely to be lower as well in favor of the new Samsung flagship.

Kantar's data also shows that Samsung performed well in France in the same period. The entry-level and mid-range Galaxy J and Galaxy A series enabled the company to effectively compete against local and Chinese rivals in the country.
