We get to hear something similar every year when Samsung launches a new flagship handset and 2018 is no different. DJ Koh, CEO of Samsung's mobile division, has said that the company expects Galaxy S9 sales to outperform the Galaxy S8. He didn't provide any figures but reports suggest that the Galaxy S8 is estimated to have sold 37 million units since its release in April last year.
Galaxy S9 sales
The Galaxy S8 really attracted customers' attention because it was a revolutionary step forward in terms of smartphone design and functionality. Many will agree that the Galaxy S9 is just more of the same, albeit with more powerful internals and a very impressive camera.
Many Samsung fans have expressed annoyance at the lack of any substantial design changes and feel that the upgraded internals aren't enough to justify the purchase of a new flagship smartphone.
However, Koh feels that the Galaxy S9 sales will outperform the Galaxy S8. “The Galaxy S9 will be released earlier in the year than the Galaxy S8 was, and as we plan to release various marketing strategies to beef up demand, I believe overall numbers will be better,” he explains.
Koh also added that he has been receiving feedback for the Galaxy S9 that is better than expected, acknowledging that “there weren't many expectations in terms of innovation.” He goes on to explain that it's a matter of perspective and that innovation is no longer about “forcing technologies to customers” but providing them with convenient experiences in the features they use the most.
The comments are in line with Samsung's marketing strategy for the Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ which position it as a “reimagined” device that improves upon some of the features that are used most frequently.
