In August this year, Ming-Chi Kuo claimed that Apple could start the production of the second-generation AirTag in the fourth quarter of 2024. Now, the journalist says that the production of the AirTag 2 has been delayed to 2025. Kuo didn’t reveal a reason for the delay in the production.
According to Kuo, the second-generation AirTag could be integrated with the Apple Vision Pro in a better way compared to the first-generation AirTag, bolstering the company’s spatial computing ecosystem. Apart from that, there are no other details about what upgrades would the AirTag 2 bring over the AirTag. There’s a high possibility that the upcoming item finder could come with the Apple U2 chip. It offers three times the range of the Apple U1 for UWB connectivity, allowing you to find items from a farther distance.
The main rival to the AirTag is the Galaxy SmartTag 2, which Samsung launched earlier this month alongside the Galaxy S23 FE and Galaxy Tab S9 FE series devices. While the AirTag costs $29, the Galaxy SmartTag 2 comes with a price tag of $27. Both devices feature UWB connectivity, making it easier for people to find the item trackers. On a related note, Apple, Google, and Samsung are developing a new standard that would prevent unwanted tracking with item trackers.
