Apple is developing a 15-inch tablet to compete with the Galaxy Tab Ultra

Samsung is working on its first “Ultra” tablet, and it doesn't seem to be the only company that has decided to pursue the large-screen tablet format. Apple is reportedly doing the same and is working on a massive 15-inch iPad to compete in this emerging premium tablet market segment.

Apple will be a little late to the party, as its 15-inch iPad might not be ready for release in 2022, according to Bloomberg (via PhoneArena). Then again, Apple isn't known for jumping the gun with new ideas, so it's natural to expect Samsung to open new doors before Apple makes a step. The Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra will likely open the door for large-screen tablets, and Apple is now preparing a response.

Granted, the Galaxy Tab S8 Ultra might be too old by the time the 15-inch iPad goes on sale, but the Ultra tablet series will likely live on, so newer models should be released on a yearly basis.

Apple's 15-inch iPad could double as a PC

Apple aims for the rumored 15-inch iPad to be a mobile productivity powerhouse, more so than the iPad Pro series. It's a multimedia tablet that sacrifices comfort for performance — but one that could double as a desktop computer when propped up on a desk and connected to appropriate accessories.

Speaking of multimedia, Apple could opt for a thicker profile for its 15-inch iPad to make room for a more powerful speaker system. Once again, this betrays a bias for multimedia consumption and productivity rather than mobility and comfort.

The 15-inch iPad could go on sale in 2023. This should give Samsung plenty of time to test the large-screen form factor using the Tab S8 Ultra as a launchpad and determine how the user experience should improve for future models.
