Lately, there have been many reports claiming that Apple is planning to use OLED displays for future iPad and MacBook models. Today, we have one more. This one also sheds light on a foldable iPad model.
Multiple executives in the tech industry have told Nikkei Asia that Apple is working on offering OLED screens in high-end iPad models and MacBook devices. The report claims that the first iPad with an OLED display will arrive next year. The first MacBook with an OLED screen, on the other hand, is reportedly under development and Apple has scheduled its production for the second half of 2025. This means that it could hit the market by the end of 2025 or early 2026. The latest news is in line with previous reports.
As for the foldable iPad, we have heard rumors in the past that Apple is planning to develop one and it will arrive as the first foldable device from the company. Today, we have an update on that. According to Nikkei Asia, Apple has “started evaluating the possibility of making” a foldable iPad after the company completes work on the non-foldable iPad with an OLED display. That means we could see the first foldable iPad in 2025. However, there’s no concrete information at the moment about when it could hit the market.
This move from Apple could benefit LG and Samsung
Apple’s shift to OLED screens could massively benefit Samsung Display and LG Display, the top two companies in innovation and manufacture of OLED screens. Multiple reports in the past have suggested that Apple will source OLED screens for upcoming iPad and MacBook models from Samsung. However, considering that the Cupertino-based tech giant might need OLED displays in very large quantities, Samsung alone might not be able to fulfill the whole demand, and that’s where LG Display could come into play.
Apple, however, will be far from being the first company to make this move. Samsung has been offering OLED displays on its tablets and laptops for the last two years. Take the Galaxy Tab S9 and Galaxy Book 3 for example. Huawei too has similar offerings. Lately, brands that mainly focus on laptops, such as Dell and Lenovo, are also rapidly increasing the usage of OLED screens in their devices. So, it looks like the whole industry is shifting towards OLED displays, a move that many people would welcome.
