Larian Studios released Baldur’s Gate 3 on Windows in August this year and on Xbox Series X|S earlier this month. Now that the game is available on the two Microsoft platforms, people have been wondering when will it arrive on Xbox Game Pass. Unfortunately, the developer has confirmed that it isn’t going to happen, now or in the future.
In an interview, IGN asked the founder of Larian Studios, Swen Vincke, if Microsoft has tried paying the developer to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to the company’s game subscription service. He replied to that question by saying “Oh, we always said from the get-go, it wasn't going to be on Game Pass, it's not going to be on Game Pass.”
”We made a big game, so I think there's a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don't charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront it's a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games,” he added. Furthermore, Swen said that Larian Studios is in the business of “making a game that has a beginning, middle, and an end.”
Going by these statements, it looks like Swne is suggesting that it wouldn’t make sense for Larian Studios financially to bring Baldur’s Gate 3 to Xbox Game Pass. While that’s a bummer for people waiting for the game to come on Microsoft’s game subscription service, they at least have clarity now. So, if they want to play the game, they can go ahead and purchase it without having to worry about the game arriving on Xbox Game Pass after they pay for it.
