This year, Samsung will introduce a new mobile device category. The company intends to release its first-ever smart ring and has confirmed a few specs at Mobile World Congress. It's called the Galaxy Ring, and it's a godsend for Samsung Health fans who aren't too fond of wearing smartwatches.
Now, as you may know, Samsung's wearable devices, including Galaxy Watches and Galaxy Buds, share the “SM-R” model number prefix. For example, the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro earbuds carry model number “SM-R510.” The 40mm Galaxy Watch 6 can be identified by model number “SM-R930.”
With that in mind, it is logical to assume that the upcoming Galaxy Ring, which is also a wearable device, will share the “SM-R” scheme. But, as it turns out, the Galaxy Ring will introduce a new model number.
Galaxy Ring model number revealed
Our colleagues at GalaxyClub have revealed that the Galaxy Ring will be the first Samsung device to sport a new “SM-Q” designation. More specifically, the Galaxy Ring has model number SM-Q500. Why 500 and not a different number? And why Q instead of R? Nobody knows.
In addition to the model number, it turns out that the firmware structure of the Galaxy Ring won't resemble smartphones and smartwatches. For instance, in Europe, Galaxy Ring firmware won't have the country code EUX. Instead, Samsung will release Galaxy Ring firmware for a variety of country codes, including EUA, EUB, EUC, EUD, EUE, and EUF for Europe and XAR / ASA for other markets.
As to when Samsung will release the Galaxy Ring with model number SM-Q500, early July is our best bet. That's when the next Unpacked event should take place, and where devices like the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and Z Fold 6 will become official.
