As we had expected, Samsung’s latest foldables, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6, will get Android, One UI, and security updates for seven years.
Samsung introduced the seven-year update policy with the Galaxy S24 series in early 2024 and is the only manufacturer other than Google to promise such long-term support.
Samsung's (and Google's) policy doesn't just beat other Android manufacturers. Even Apple can't match it, as iPhones are only guaranteed updates for a period of five years.
And now, Samsung has extended the list of devices that will get updates for seven years by adding the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Z Flip 6. The two phones come running Android 14 and One UI 6.1.1 out of the box, and unless Google and Samsung change the way they assign numbers to Android and One UI version numbers, the Fold 6 and Flip 6 will get updates up till Android 21 and One UI 13.
As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 will also get security updates for seven years. The frequency of security updates will slow down in the last couple of years, but that's better than not having any support at all.
What about spare parts? Foldables are more fragile and prone to breaking than regular phones, and there's a good chance many users will need to get parts such as the display and battery replaced if they keep the Fold 6 or Flip 6 for seven years. But will Samsung guarantee spare parts for that entire duration?
Unlike Google, Samsung has made no official commitment to ensure spare part availability for seven years. However, we have reached out to the company for a comment and will update this article when we get a response.
