Samsung has announced that the Google Meet app is going away from its smart monitors and smart TVs soon. It is apparently a decision taken by Google to focus on Android rather than offering its communication services on platforms from other brands. This will affect millions of users.
Google Meet is going away from Samsung's smart monitors and smart TVs launched in 2021 or later
The South Korean firm has started notifying that Google Meet won't be available on its smart monitors and smart TVs starting next month. The app will disappear or not function on those devices starting March 9, 2024. Apparently, Google has decided to shut down its video calling and video conferencing app on Tizen to focus on Android TV/Google TV instead. Google is also shutting down Google Assistant on Samsung TVs and monitors.
Smart monitors (7000 series and up) and TVs that Samsung launched from 2021 to 2023 came with Google Meet. However, the smart monitors and smart TVs that Samsung launched this year don't have the video calling app from Google. Even Digital Signage products from the company, including those in the The Flip, QMB-T, QBB, QBB-N, QMB, QMB-N, QHB, QBC, QBC-N, QMC, QHC, OHB-S, OHB, BEC-H, IAB, IAC series, will lack Google Meet functionality. The Smart Monitor M50 (and newer/higher-end models) and the Odyssey G65 (and higher-end models) monitors will also part ways with Google Meet.
Users of all these devices will get an in-app notification about Google Meet's termination starting the 9th of February, 2024, and the termination of the service will happen from March 9, 2024. Samsung will suggest some alternatives to Google Meet to users at a later date.
Thanks for the tip, Thijs!
