It's been almost four years since the Gear Sport smartwatch was introduced, and an even longer five years since Samsung took the veil off the Gear S3. But despite their age, Samsung has yet to abandon support for these wearables, and on the contrary, the company is now rolling out a new firmware update for both the Gear Sport and the Gear S3.
The Gear Sport / Gear S3 updates carry firmware versions R600XXU2FUD1 and R760XXU2FUD1, respectively. The official changelog for the Gear Sport is unclear, but Samsung did publish the changelog for the Gear S3 firmware update and it likely reflects changes done to the Gear Sport as well. There aren't many.
The version of Tizen OS remains unchanged at 4.0.0.7, however, the changelog mentions improved Wi-Fi stability, which is a welcomed change given the nature of these non-LTE smartwatches and their reliance on Wi-Fi for connectivity.
We can confirm that the new firmware update is available for the Gear S3 in China at the very least, though it might also be available in other regions. As always, Gear S3 and / or Gear Sport owners can check for new firmware updates from the Galaxy Wearable apps on their connected phones.
