You can count the number of changes that the Galaxy Z Fold 5 brings compared to its predecessor on your fingers. As expected, this was a refinement of the previous iteration, but Samsung did make one change that punches far above its weight for you.

Samsung has used a new hinge for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 that delivers several benefits. Not only does it make the device slimmer but it also improves durability since the hinge has fewer moving parts. It may seem like a minor change but once you take a moment to consider, it makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 well worth its asking price.

Story continues after the video

Big things come in small packages

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 hinge has a smaller footprint compared to its predecessor which means that the newest foldable phone is both thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. Since the vast majority of customers make these improvements as the basis of their purchase decision, Samsung has paid special attention to deliver them with the Galaxy Z Fold 5.

This new hinge eliminates the gap between the two panels of the device almost entirely. This means that there's added protection for the foldable display as there's a lesser chance of foreign objects getting stuck between the two halves. It also provides the device with a more flatter silhouette which makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 look sharper and modern.

The dual rail structure of the hinge has fewer moving parts and this means fewer points of failure. Even though the hinge Samsung has used in previous models held up very well over multiple years of daily use, a simpler mechanism results in better durability. What's impressive is that no trade-off has been made for this. The Galaxy Z Fold 5 is still IPX8 water resistant and has Flex Mode.

When viewed in isolation, the new hinge not seem like a significant enough change to customers, particularly those who don't keep track of the technical changes. However, much of the Galaxy Z Fold 5's value proposition rests on this tiny component. It's what makes the device more durable, more portable so carrying it around or in your pocket is easier, it makes the Galaxy Z Fold 5 look much better, and it does all of that without making any compromises.

If you'd like to experience just how the new hinge makes the user experience so much better, go ahead and pre-order the Galaxy Z Fold 5 from Samsung, before the device is released on August 11.
