For the first time in South Korea, Samsung's Home Appliance Division obtained the international “Artificial Intelligence (AI) Management System” certificate for responsible AI-related practices.

Samsung announced this week that its Home Appliance Division received the ISO/IEC 42001 certificate, which concerns companies that care about responsibly responding to and managing AI-related risks and ethics when they develop and provide AI-based services and products.

More companies should use AI responsibly

Samsung uses AI systems in its washing machines and dryers, dishwashers, robot vacuum cleaners, and numerous other SmartThings-based home appliances and services. Previously, all of these products and services obtained the AI+ and/or the AI Reliability certifications.

However, now, as far as the Korea Standards Association is concerned, Samsung's home appliances use artificial intelligence systems responsibly and ethically in ways that don't put user data at risk. Not only that, the company leverages AI responsibly throughout a product's lifecycle, not just upon releasing it to the market.

According to Samsung, the Association evaluated the company's use of AI for security, fairness, transparency, reliability of data, and whether the company manages its AI systems carefully throughout the lifetime of its home appliances, from planning and development to mass production and disposal. So, in case you were worrying, your washing machine or SmartThings device powered by AI shouldn't turn on you.
