Samsung announced this week that it established a 6G network research group in the UK to advance next-gen communication technologies, identifying the UK among the “key countries” of mobile industry innovations.
Samsung's new endeavor for advancing 6G technologies will be taking place at its existing Samsung R&D Institute in the UK; however, the company says that the research group will be just one component of a wider global 6G development network spanning across multiple R&D centers worldwide.
A few years deep into 6G development
It's important to note that although Samsung's new 6G project in the UK is meant to accelerate the development of next-gen networks, the company kickstarted its 6G efforts at Samsung Research all the way back in 2019.
The tech giant's efforts to advance 6G technologies became more apparent this year. In January, Samsung launched a collaborative program with Korea University to nurture talent and establish a department dedicated to 6G research and development. A few months later, in May, Samsung held a 6G forum titled “The Next Hyper-Connected Experience for All,” where industry experts were invited to expand on the topics of 6G and AI-based intelligent networks.
5G smartphone customers need not worry about their devices becoming outdated anytime soon — at least not as far as connectivity is concerned. Samsung's tentative roadmap aims for 6G technology to become available in 2030, which means that 5G will be here to stay for a while.
