Samsung dominates the foldable smartphone market as it took the lead on this form factor before anyone else. Over the past two years, the company has significantly improved its foldable smartphones, with the 2021 models proving to be a major success.
Other companies are trying to compete with Samsung in the foldable market but haven't been able to bother it much yet. OnePlus wants to take a crack at it and rumors suggest that it has multiple foldables in the pipeline for 2023.
Samsung's foldables will be even better in 2023
This isn't the first time we're hearing that OnePlus may be working on foldable smartphones. Gary Chen, the company's software head, had previously said that Oppo's upcoming foldable phones will benefit from the new features that OnePlus introduces with Oxygen OS 13.
Initially, it was expected that perhaps OnePlus will launch a foldable smartphone to rival the Galaxy Z Fold series. Samsung's flagship foldable is pretty well established so it won't be easy for OnePlus to unsettle its position in the market.
With rumors of multiple models in the pipeline for 2023, there's a possibility that we might also see a challenger for the Galaxy Z Flip series. Samsung's clamshell foldable is incredibly popular. The Galaxy Z Flip 3 in particular has become its best-selling foldable smartphone.
The company is already expected to make meaningful improvements to the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Galaxy Z Flip 4 due this year. Expect more progress on the durability front as well. Their predecessors happen to be the world's first water resistant foldables, a feat that Samsung achieved before anyone else.
So one can only imagine how much better Samsung's foldables will be in 2023 when the subsequent iterations are launched. OnePlus can try but it will have a tough road ahead.
