Samsung might bring more RGB lights to Odyssey gaming monitors

Most Galaxy phone users are familiar with Edge Lighting — an optional feature that makes the phone's display edges light up when new notifications arrive. Judging by fresh developments, Samsung might apply a similar design, at least in name, to upcoming Odyssey gaming monitors.

We came across new Samsung trademark applications for the Edge Lighting brand at trademark offices in Korea, the US, and Australia. While easy to dismiss, given that Edge Lighting already exists for mobile devices, these trademark applications stand out because they don't concern Galaxy phones or tablets.

Instead, the new Edge Lighting trademarks list only one category in the Designated Goods section, namely “Monitors for games.” By the looks of it, this trademark application is unrelated to Galaxy mobile devices and their Edge Lighting feature, but could develop into something new for the Odyssey monitor lineup.

The evolution of Core and Eclipse Lighting?

Trademark applications are often hard to rely on as a window into the future, but one explanation for these new Edge Lighting trademark applications might be that Samsung wants to evolve existing gaming monitor lighting technologies.

Select Samsung Odyssey gaming monitors have a Core Lighting or Eclipse Lighting element at the back, and through the accompanying Core Sync and and Eclipse Sync features, these monitors shine RGB lights behind them.

Core Sync and Eclipse Sync can produce colors that match the display's content to create a more immersive ambiance. Many Odyssey monitors use Core Lighting and Core Sync, whereas Eclipse Lighting and Eclipse Sync technologies are used by high-end gaming solutions like the Odyssey Ark.

The story continues after the video

In theory, at least, this new Edge Lighting trademark associated with gaming monitors might suggest that Samsung intends to create a new lighting setup — one that would replace or enhance the Core Lighting or Eclipse Lighting designs with extra RGB light strips around the monitor's edges.

Third-party solutions for all-around monitor edge lighting exists. Samsung may plan on developing its own and upgrading its design for upcoming Odyssey gaming monitors.

Then again, we're looking at a trademark application, which could mean that Samsung might want to protect its intellectual property without planning on releasing gaming monitors with a so-called Edge Lighting feature. There's no way to be sure if a real product will come out of this, but we'll let you know if more information comes to light.
