Samsung Display is partly responsible for making the new Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 a reality, and the display-making branch is showing off its latest achievements through an infographic titled “Brand new cutting-edge foldable OLED technology.”

Some aspects of the OLED display technology used by this year's foldable phones, such as the UPC Plus sub-pixel structure, aren't new. But others, such as the higher brightness for the Galaxy Z Fold 5 foldable panel and the Z Flip 5's cover screen, represent a step up from the previous generation. You can check out the highlights after our hands-on video below.

Story continues after the video

Minimized folding stress and extreme durability

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 employ a new hinge design that leaves no gap between the folding halves. Samsung claims that the Galaxy Z Fold 5's foldable panel has “the world's smallest curvature (1.6R)” when folded shut, but thanks to an optimally curved design inside the Flex Hinge, it minimized folding stress.

It's worth noting that the Galaxy Z Flip 5 uses the same optimally curved design for the waterdrop-shaped fold but the panel has a 1.9R radius when the phone is folded shut.

Samsung Display says the new foldable phones offer “uncompromised durability with proven reliability in extreme conditions.” In fact, the phones were certified by Bureau Veritas for 200,000 folds at temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius, 150,000 folds at 60 degrees Celsius, and 30,000 folds at -20 degrees Celsius.

Recently, Samsung shared a video showing the rigorous testing procedures its new foldable phones went through to prove their high level of durability. The process included folding tests, drop tests, environmental chamber tests, tumble tests, water-resistance tests, S Pen drawing tests, and steel ball drop tests.

The Galaxy Z Fold 5 and Galaxy Z Flip 5 are available for pre-order and will hit the shelves on August 11. Customers who buy the new foldables during the pre-order period get free storage upgrades to 512GB, and in some markets, they can benefit from Samsung Care+ bonuses for peace of mind in case something happens to go wrong with these devices.
