In a recent development, Samsung has set a goal to complete the development of the 11nm, 6th generation 1c DRAM chip by June this year. According to a report by BusinessKorea, the company has reportedly asked its researchers to stop or skip the development of 1b DRAM, which is a 12nm chipset.
It is believed that Samsung wanted to widen the technology gap with its competitors, which include SK Hynix and Micron Technology. Besides, this is not the first time Samsung has ditched a DRAM development stage to move up to a higher level. Previously, it gave up the mass production of 28nm DRAMs to focus on producing 25nm DRAMs.
Industry experts believe that it is not going to be an easy task for Samsung to produce 11nm DRAMs, as it requires advanced technologies. However, Samsung hopes to find a way to do so because it is under tremendous pressure to develop the 1c DRAM ahead of its completion as it was behind its two competitors when it came to volume production of 1a DRAMs, according to BusinessKorea.
Update: Samsung reached out to us and clarified that the Business Korea story is factually inaccurate and has been revised.
