Samsung has been working towards using sustainable products not only for packaging but also for manufacturing its products. Its efforts have received international recognition in the past, and recently, Samsung won the 2022 SEAL Business Sustainability Award for transforming fishing nets into high-performance, recycled materials for Galaxy devices.
The SEAL Business Sustainability Award is conducted every year and is judged by “a panel of sustainability and environmental, social and governance (ESG) experts.” The main aim of this award is to recognize the most impactful companies that promote sustainability and are actively working toward the betterment of the environment.
Sungsun Park, EVP and Head of the Mechanical R&D Team of MX Business at Samsung Electronics, said, “We are honored to receive the 2022 SEAL Sustainable Product Award for our efforts to advance more circular product designs and by doing more with less when it comes to ocean plastic waste.”
Fishing nets are one of the most widespread types of ocean-bound plastic that are discarded in the ocean each year. Samsung initiated its efforts to incorporate fishing nets with the Galaxy S22 series and later started using them on its other Galaxy ecosystems. This includes Galaxy tablets, the Galaxy Book, and even Galaxy earbuds.
By collaborating with like-minded companies, Samsung was able to create a new material from the abandoned fishing nets and still keep its high-quality standards. Innovation is a part of Samsung MX’s sustainability vision, ‘Galaxy for the Planet,' which outlines the company's vision for adopting climate actions across global business operations and the product lifecycle and also highlights how Samsung will be using recycled materials in all its new products.
The company aims to use recycled plastic in mobile packaging, achieve zero standby power consumption for smartphone chargers, and divert all waste from landfills by 2025.
