Today, March 17, 2023, is World Sleep Day. And like the World Sleep Day Committee that established this annual event and the National Sleep Foundation that celebrates Sleep Awareness Week (ending March 18), Samsung is raising awareness of the importance of a good night's sleep.

Samsung is trying to achieve this using its own tools, such as the Galaxy Watch 5 series and the Samsung Health platform, along with the Sleep Coaching feature. The latter uses a personally-tailored month-long program to track the Watch user's sleep pattern over seven days, then assigns cute sleep symbol animals representing the user's sleep pattern. Symbols include:

  • Unconcerned Lion: Sleeps for an average of 10-15 hours a day.
  • Sensitive Hedgehog: Active at night and watchful.
  • Nervous Penguin: Sleeps sporadically only for 3.5 hours a day, and they're always nervous.
  • Sun Averse Mole: Sleeps about 8 hours on average, similar to humans. They're nocturnal.
  • Cautious Deer: Sleeps less than 10 minutes. They run away when they feel they might be in danger.
  • Easygoing Walrus: They can stay awake for 84 hours and sleep for up to 19 hours at a time.
  • Alligator on the Hunt: A nocturnal animal. They can sleep with one eye closed as if winking.
  • Exhausted Shark: Rarely sleeps. Always awake as they can't breathe if they stop moving.

Samsung is trying to help people get well-rested

A Samsung study published late last year revealed that many people have a harder time getting a good night's sleep due to how the pandemic era changed their sleeping habits. But Samsung's smartwatches and the Health platform can help people achieve better sleep and build good habits.

Everyone has a different sleep pattern, and through a combination of sleep tracking and Sleep Coaching, Samsung allows people to learn what's unique about their sleep patterns and get better rest. Samsung relies on data gathered from the Galaxy Watch's BioActive Sensor and takes into account the user's blood oxygen level and other factors.

Furthermore, through tools like Sleep Mode syncing between Galaxy Watches and smartphones, users can reduce distractions when they go to bed. While tools like SmartThings can automate a wide range of smart home products, from air conditioners to bedroom blinds and lights.

Samsung's latest smartwatch series unveiled in August 2022 consists of the Galaxy Watch 5 Pro, available in one size, and the Galaxy Watch 5 in 40 and 44mm sizes. Check out our review videos below for a more in-depth look at what these wearables can do.
