Sony’s current flagship smartphone, the Xperia 1 V, has a telephoto camera with an optical zoom ranging from 3.5x to 5.2x, which is slightly higher than the 5x optical zoom of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. Well, the company’s upcoming flagship phone, the Xperia 1 VI, which the brand is going to launch on 15 May 2024, is going to have a telephoto camera with an even higher optical zoom, putting the one from Samsung further back in the optical zoom race.
In a new teaser video, Sony has revealed that the Xperia 1 VI will have a telephoto camera with a focal length ranging from 85mm to 138mm. If the phone’s primary camera comes with the same focal length as that of the Xperia 1 V, which is 24mm, then it means that its telephoto camera will offer an optical zoom of 3.5x to 5.75x over the primary camera. That’s not a significant improvement but it will certainly be a welcome upgrade.
The story continues after the video…
Vivo’s upcoming flagship phone, the X100 Ultra will also have a higher optical zoom (7x) than that of the Galaxy S24 Ultra. As you can see, the one from Samsung will soon fall behind the competition. We hope that the South Korean tech giant offers its next flagship phone, the Galaxy S25 Ultra, with a higher optical zoom (maybe bring back Galaxy S23 Ultra’s 10x optical zoom), and take back the crown for offering the highest optical zoom.
