WhatsApp is undoubtedly the king of messaging apps. With 2.7 billion active monthly users, WhatsApp has by far the biggest market share. It's available for both Android and iOS, the two leading mobile operating systems, with the former accounting for more than 70% of WhatsApp's user base.
It's the reason why WhatsApp supports older versions of Android far longer compared to iOS. But today, the list of Android versions supported by the app has gotten a little shorter. As announced recently, WhatsApp will not work on smartphones running Android version 5.0 and older after October 27, 2023.
Naturally, this also means WhatsApp has stopped working on any Samsung Galaxy smartphone running Android 5.0 or older. So, if by any chance you're still using a Galaxy phone that's a decade old or more, well, you can no longer use it to chat with friends and family over WhatsApp.
And perhaps that might be the reason you need to finally upgrade to a modern smartphone. We would recommend upgrading within the Samsung ecosystem of course. Samsung has excellent phones available at all kinds of price points — and different form factors — these days and there's something for everyone regardless of budget.
