The nature of my work is such that I use all of Samsung's flagship phones every year. Yet, there hasn't been one that could steal me away from my beloved foldables. I'm primary a Flip user and have stuck to these clamshell models for over four years now.
Prior to this, I was the biggest Galaxy Note fan. I'd always prefer those devices over Samsung's Galaxy S flagships. Despite that deep affection for the Note series, even its resurrection in the form of the Galaxy S Ultra models wasn't enough to sway me from my beloved foldables.
There's a lot to like about Samsung foldables, particularly the clamshell Flip models. I really appreciate the versatility of these devices. The Flex Mode has been particularly useful on my travels, helping me capture photos and videos with the device even when I don't have a tripod. The cover display is super useful for firing off quick messages or checking important widgets without needing to unfold the device.
I wouldn't trade this functionality for another slab phone that doesn't provide any unique benefits of the form factor, and in essence, feels like a downgrade from the Samsung foldables that don't just look futuristic but have also stood the test of time and addressed any duality concerns apprehensive customers may have had.
However, I feel that there's no something on the horizon that could make me betray this undying loyalty to foldable phones. Thankfully, that something also comes from Samsung. The Galaxy S25 Edge has already got me thinking about making it my daily driver and the phone isn't even officially out yet!
Could it really tempt me away from the foldable life? As someone who deeply appreciates great industrial design and engineering prowess, I believe that yes, it can. Those were two of the reasons why I moved to foldables in the first place and the Galaxy S25 Edge is already scoring pretty high marks in both of those categories.
The Galaxy S25 Edge is going to be impressively thin. While no official figures have been presented yet, we know that it's going to be less than 6.0mm thin, one rumor has even pegged the figure at a very impressive 5.84mm. It's also claimed to weigh less than 160g.
If these figures are accurate, the Galaxy S25 Edge will be both thinner and lighter than the Galaxy Z Flip 6. Let's be clear, won't be a watered down variant like the “FE” phones, it's a premium offering, boasting the same Armor Aluminum frame as the other flagship models. I can only imagine how nice it must feel to hold the device.
Samsung didn't let anyone get hands-on with the Galaxy S25 Edge at its Unpacked event last month, but it did let us take many pictures of it from a distance. Took at them and tell me that side profile doesn't make you want to start throwing your cash at the screen?
It's a stunning industrial design that's got both beauty and brains. It's going to run a special variant of the Snapdragon 8 Elite chipset, have a 6.7-inch Dynamic AMOLED display, and a 3,900mAh battery. Cramming flagship-level specs in a device that's going to be Samsung's thinnest phone yet speaks to the company's incredible engineering potential.
After foldables, the Galaxy S25 Edge is arguably one of the boldest hardware bets that Samsung has made in the mobile market. It gives us glimpses of the brilliance that the company showed back in the day when it was always willing to try unique and unconventional ideas just to stand out from the competition.
So, does that mean I'll be smashing the pre-order button like crazy once the Galaxy S25 Edge launches in the coming months? I'll admit, it's not an easy decision. I'm that much of a foldable loyalist that it would require overcoming significant inertia to make that switch, but for the first time in years, there's a device that's making me seriously reconsider.
What's more likely is that I'll opt for the best of both worlds, since I keep two separate Galaxy phones anyway. One of them is most definitely going to be a Galaxy S25 Edge.
