Introduction
Last year, Samsung made one of its most significant upgrades yet to its smartwatch lineup with the Galaxy Watch 4 series. It formally ditched Tizen and adopted Google's Wear OS as the software for its smartwatches. The new watch also came with more powerful internals and enhanced functionality.
In 2022, Samsung focused on design changes for the Galaxy Watch 5 series. The company also added a lot of new functionality to the smartwatch while also making overall improvements.
Design
The Galaxy Watch 5 is available in 40mm and 44mm sizes, with a 1.2-inch and 1.4-inch Super AMOLED display respectively, in the same round design that we've come to love. As expected, the physical rotating bezel is gone. For the first time, Sapphire Crystal has been used on the display for added protection.
The smartwatch has an Armor Aluminum case and comes with a sport band. The 44mm and 40mm models measure 43.3 x 44.4 x 9.8mm and 39.3 x 40.4 x 9.8mm while weighing 33.5g and 28.7g respectively. Durability is assured by the IP68 water resistance and MIL-STD-810H ratings.
Specifications
The Galaxy Watch 5 utilizes the same 5nm Exynos W920 dual-core 1.18GHz chipset as the Galaxy Watch 4. It's paired with 1.5GB of RAM and 16GB of onboard storage. The same BioActive sensor that Samsung introduced with its predecessor is present here as well.
Health and fitness sensors include ECG, heart rate, blood pressure, and BIA. A new temperature sensor has been added as well. Sleep tracking has been improved with coaching new provided to help users get a good night's rest.
The 44mm and 40mm models have a 410mAh and 284mAh battery, respectively.
Software and Features
Google's Wear OS powers the Galaxy Watch 5. New software improvements allow for more functionality. Google Assistant is available on the smartwatch as well, as are a wide variety of apps from the Play Store.
Existing health and fitness features from Samsung's smartwatch lineup, such as the ECG sensor and blood oxygen monitoring are available. The Bio-Electrical Impedance Analysis sensor introduced last year provides its functionality as well.
Price and Availability
The Galaxy Watch 5 was unveiled at Samsung's Unpacked event on August 10 with August 26 as the release date. Prices start at $279 for the Galaxy Watch 5. It's available in Bluetooth and Bluetooth + LTE configurations. Color options include Graphite, Pink Gold and Silver for the 40mm and Graphite, Sapphire, and Silver for the 44mm model.
