Samsung announced the Gear S3 watchface design contest last month in collaboration with aBlogtoWatch and watchface customization platform Facer. The contest challenged designers and developers to use Facer to create their own unique watchfaces for the Gear S3. The company received an overwhelming response.
The panel of judges included famous watch designer Yvan Arpa, aBlogtoWatch founder Ariel Adams and Ariel Vardi, Co-founder of Little Labs, the developer of Facer. They went through more than 2,000 submissions that covered a wide range of styles that ranged from traditional to outlandish.
Each watchface submission was evaluated on its quality, creativity and innovative use of the smartwatch platform. The list was narrowed down to five finalists which included MbM-Aileron 2 Gold by John Morga, Muro by JC Dalisay, Green Army by Jimmy Cheung, Black Revolutions by HarpoCrate and HUD by TIKTOK.
Samsung has announced that the Gear S3 watchface design contest has been won by MbM–Aileron 2 Gold, by John Morga. This aviation-inspired watchface received the most votes in the final round and was the only design that was universally nominated by all judges in the contest's early stages.
The winner, John Morga, will now receive cash rewards from Samsung and each finalist will also receive prizes which include a Gear S3 smartwatch, featured placement of their design on aBlogtoWatch, the Facer platform and on Samsung's social media channels.
Their designs will be turned into functional watchfaces which will be available to countless users on Facer and they will also be enrolled into Facer's Premium Designer Program which provides royalties on revenue generated by their designs.
All of the shortlisted designs will soon be available for download via the Galaxy Apps Store.
