SK Telecom and Samsung have been jointly awarded the Infrastructure Innovation Award at the Global Telecoms Business Telecoms Innovation Summit 2017 for their successful verification of 5G mobile handover in an urban outdoor environment.
We first discovered that Samsung was working on introducing 5G when it revealed that it managed to clock a transmission speed of 7.5Gbps (940 MB per second) using a 28GHz 5G cellular connection back in 2014.
“It's a pleasure to be recognized as key players for turning 5G into reality. The result signifies the opportunity of mmWave, which will create new 5G business models requiring wide bandwidths,” said Paul Kyung-whoon Cheun, EVP at Samsung.
Don't be fooled into thinking that a launch is right around the corner, though. Major carriers in the United States are hoping to introduce their 5G services in early 2018, but pricing will be at an industry high to cover the cost of development.
