Samsung introduced the ability to take an electrocardiogram or ECG from your wrist with the Galaxy Watch Active 2 last year. However, this feature wasn't available at launch as Samsung needed regulatory approval.
These things tend to take time. Samsung only received approval from the regulators in South Korea for ECG a few months ago. The feature still remains unavailable elsewhere but that's about to change soon. Samsung has confirmed that the FDA has approved the ECG feature for use in the United States.
FDA approves Galaxy Watch 3's ECG feature for the US
The announcement was part of the Galaxy Watch 3 unveil. Samsung's new smartwatch can also help you take an ECG reading. The company confirmed today that the Samsung ECG Monitor app has been approved by the FDA.
It added that the feature will be made available in the United State soon. This also bodes well for the Galaxy Watch Active 2 and it's quite likely that its ECG functionality may also be enabled in the US sooner rather than later.
Both of these smartwatches are also able to measure blood pressure. However, the FDA hasn't provided approval for this feature just yet. Samsung did receive the go-ahead for blood pressure monitoring in South Korea this year. Hopefully, the FDA will allow this feature to be used in the United States as well.
