Samsung has been pretty amazing in 2020 in terms of rolling out software updates to its devices. With the start of the new year, the company has blessed Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ users with a new software update. It has started rolling out the January 2021 security patch to these two smartphones.

The Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ are receiving the January 2021 security patch in Germany right now. As expected, it is a minor update (113.48MB) based on Android 10, and it doesn't bring any new software feature to the phones. The new software bears firmware version G960FXXSDFTL1 for the Galaxy S9 and G965FXXSDFTL1 for the Galaxy S9+. Right now, it is not clear which security bugs it fixes, but we expect Samsung to detail them soon.

If you are a Galaxy S9 or Galaxy S9+ user in Germany, you would have already received a notification for the new update. If you haven't, you can manually check for it by navigating to Settings » Software update and tapping on Download and install. If you don't want to wait for the update, you can download it manually from our firmware section.

It is surprising to see the Galaxy S9 series getting the new security patch ahead of newer high-end phones from the company. We expect Samsung to expand the new security patch to other markets and other devices soon.
